  • Development of new minerals business, namely, Calcined Kaolin
  • Installation of a new Tension Leveler at Taloja Sheet Plant to improve quality export potential of value-added sheet products.

(vii) Technology, R&D & Environmental Achievements
  • The key point being that old plants were the competitive advantage through implementation of carefully selected technological innovations to place them at par with global standards. Some highlights are as under:
  • Conversion to Dry Scrubbing at the Hirakud Smelter despite the constraints of HSS technology which ensured cleaner technology with no land used for secured land filling of wet scrubber sludge and no water use in process.

  • Successful introduction of Point Break Feeders at the Hirakud Smelter. A process never tried out before in HSS smelters, till Hirakud successfully demonstrated it. This has significantly improved energy efficiency by 200 kWh/t and reduced PFC emissions (Global Warming Gas of high potency), by 50% earning carbon credits.
  • Energy consumption at the Belgaum Alumina Refinery touched a national record low of 10.2 GJ/t through increased productivity, improved extractions efficiencies and operation of various units at peak performance parameters through electronic controls (DCS). This also places the Refinery amongst the lowest energy-consuming units, comparable with the mega refineries of the world.
  • The Muri Alumina Refinery (oldest in the country) has the unique distinction of retrofitting facilities for conserving energy by increasing castable refractory lining and recovering flue gas heat through cyclones in the existing rotary calciner.
  • Alumina Refinery at Belgaum also made another breakthrough in rehabilitating the abandoned Red Mud stack without using topsoil but using only industrial waste and domestic refuse. The original bald and dusty red mud area became lush green with vegetation inviting the eco-system to redevelop.
  • The Hot Flue Gas from the Oil/Gas operated Remelting furnace at the Belur Sheetplant is passed through the electrically operated Ingot Preheating Furnace, thereby utilizing the heat content of the waste flue gas to heat up the Cold ingots in the Preheating furnace from ambient temperature during the initial hours. Electrical heaters are thereafter used to attain the final temperature of the Ingots prior to Hot Rolling. This has resulted in significant savings in electricity consumption.
(viii) Product Development
§  Collaborated with RDSO for design and development of aluminium alloy plates and extrusions for the construction of country's first railway freight wagon in aluminium.
§  Clad fin and header stock was developed for inter-cooler of automobile diesel engines.
§  The product-mix was enriched with introduction of variety of rooting sheets for construction sector and propeller design tread sheets for transport sector.
§  Eco-friendly, non-staining lubricants developed in-house for extrusion and rolling applications.
§  Analytical method was developed for measurement of hot rolled coating thickness on rolled products.
§  Tropicalised blister packs with both sides Alu-Alu foil structure were developed for import substitution.

General Manager, rose to become Director (Projects & Technology), and concurrently held the positions of Director (Finance), Director (Production) and as Chairman & Managing Director from 1993. Operated within the constraints of a PSU, maintained a managerial style that reflected independent thinking, quick decision making skills and qualities of leadership, delegation, empowerment and the ability to motivate his teams to succeed. While productivity improvements and technological upgrades improved performance on the shop floor; it was business process systems, re-engineering of logistics, purchase; cost management, inventory side by side with business strategies for marketing and customer service were among the significant contributions made.
(i)        Started with the construction of
2.4 million TPY bauxite mines at Panchpatmali
0.8 million TPY capacity alumina refinery at Damanjodi
2.18 lakh TPY capacity aluminium smelter at Angul
600 MW captive power plant at Angul
Port facilities at Visakhapatnam for export of alumina and import of caustic soda.
(ii)           Productivity improvements and de-bottlenecking of existing plant was achieved by improving the liquor productivity, introduction of Process Controls and addition of CGM in the alumina and other modifications, including introduction of GPS System in Bauxite Mines. Similarly, the Smelter Plant production capacity wasenhanced from 218 KTPA to 230 KTPA by improving the current efficiency and Anode density, etc.
(iii)          R&D efforts resulted in development of new process with respect to the following :
§  Process development for Special Grade Alumina, Alpha Alumina and Special Hydrale and put up pilot plant, which was later commercialized.
§  Process development for manufacture of Zeolite A from Sodium Aluminate liquor jointly with CSCRI, Bhavnagar, which was patented and awarded nationally by NRDC & CSIR.

-       Predesilication of gibbsitic bauxite
-       Identification, development and implementation of suspended hydrate separation system High productivity precipitation circuit by implementation of inter-stage cooling system and hydrate classification system.
-       Smelter & Power
Smelter expansion - from 230 ktpa to 345 ktpa
Power - additional capacity from 720 MW to 960 MW
§  The introduction of IT during the eighties and early nineties when computerization was not popular word, organizing customer meets during the era of a sellers' market and expansion projects well before Indian industry had opened up to global competition - are some notable initiatives that paved the way to take NALCO to its present position. Combining the modern with the traditional - it was innovation, creativity and new ideas on the one hand, along with conscientious documentation, policies and guidelines on the other.
§  A significant achievement during tenure as CMD, was the initiative to link the domestic aluminium prices to the London Metal Exchange - a practice now followed by all the industry majors, but declared and implemented first by Nalco way back in 1993.
(iv) Financial Performance of NALCO during tenure as CMD from 93 to 96
